Man charged in the murder of a Sikh in Edmonton
Edmonton Police Service charged Edgar Wesker, a 40-year-old Edmonton man, for the murder of Jashandeep Maan, 22.
"[Maan] died of multiple sharp force injuries and the manner of death was homicide," the police shared in a statement.
There has been an increase in violent attacks against Sikhs in Canada, including incidents being investigated as hate crimes.
"We are deeply concerned by rising incidents of anti-Sikh hate and the proliferation of anti-Sikh rhetoric and images online. Sikhs are a very visible community due to their articles of faith, which makes them easy targets for hate attacks," the WSO's Danish Singh said in a statement regarding separate attacks on Sikhs in Toronto and Peterborough last month.
The investigation in Edmonton is still underway.
